San Antonio Zoo is looking to hire an enthusiastic individual to join our zoo family's full-time Animal Ambassador Team! As an Animal Ambassador Specialist, you'll make meaningful connections between guests and zoo animals. Leading mission-aligned encounters, highly motivated and passionate team members will inspire guests to help secure a future for wildlife with the help of select furry, feathered, and scaled ambassador friends. We are a year-round operation; this position requires a flexible, rotating schedule to include work weekends, holidays, and before and special after-hours assignments. The Animal Ambassador Specialist role has a full-time schedule, including weekends, and compensation is $15.50. As an Animal Ambassador Specialist, you will perform various daily tasks related to the handling and care of ambassador animals and their environments. In addition to amazing animal care, Animal Ambassador Specialists provide educational and conservation-focused public encounters through professional, formal, and informal presentations and animal interactions. You will be responsible for all aspects of animal care, operant conditioning, and record-keeping for a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates. Animal Ambassador Specialists also participate in onsite and offsite animal programs, events, and outreach.

You must be fully committed to San Antonio Zoo's mission to create awareness that inspires action to care for the wildlife we steward and the animals we protect. In addition, it would be best if you took pride in knowing your hard work is making a difference in wildlife conservation.


  • Ability to safely work around delicate, wild, and potentially dangerous animals
  • Ability to create, plan, implement, and execute a variety of activities in the Animal Ambassador program
  • Ability to communicate effectively, presenting biological, historical, and conservation information professionally and engagingly
  • Strong desire to work with the public to connect ambassador animals, guests, and mission
  • Knowledge of animal behavior and experience in the application of operant conditioning techniques
  • Associate degree in wildlife management, zoology, biology, or related field preferred
  • Minimum one-year progressive zookeeping experience in an AZA-accredited facility or similar
  • Minimum one- year experience with public presentations and animal handling preferred
  • Sufficient delicacy to handle, examine and move without harming sick, injured, or small (often neonatal) animals
  • Sufficient strength, agility, and coordination to net, capture, and/or restrain animals of varying size, strength, and agility.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn other software platforms.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
  • Valid Texas driver's license or obtain within three months of employment.
  • Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment National Sex Offender Search, Criminal Background Check, and Drug Screen.
