San Antonio Zoo of San Antonio, TX, is looking to hire a full-time Horticulture Manager to join our zoo family! San Antonio Zoo is comprised of over 54 acres. The Horticulture Manager oversees all initiatives related to the zoo grounds. In addition to maintaining the Public Gardens, the Horticulture Manager provides vision and execution for special events involving plants, flowers, and topiaries; if you're interested in a new challenging environment, working at the Zoo would be perfect for you! We are a year-round operation; this position requires a flexible schedule to work weekends, holidays, and occasionally after hours for special assignments. Our Horticulture Manager is a full-time schedule and the compensation for this position is 40k.

As the Horticulture Manager, you are responsible for operations and exhibit maintenance across San Antonio Zoo. You are also responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing landscape designs, installation & orders, and a proactive approach to managing plant health. You are also responsible for the Greenhouse operations and Will Smith Zoo School grounds and creating a harmonious work environment for all team members.

You must be fully committed to San Antonio Zoo's mission to create awareness that inspires action to care for the wildlife we steward and the animals we protect. You take pride in knowing your hard work is making a difference in wildlife conservation.


  • Associate degree in a horticultural-related field or a minimum of 5 years work experience equivalency
  • Must have a valid TX Driver's license and a good driving record for vehicle operation.
  • Must have TX Pesticide applicators license, or the ability to obtain one
  • Minimum of three years of responsible leadership experience in management or supervisory positions.
  • 2+ years of experience in Residential or Commercial Landscape Maintenance management and supervision or work experience equivalency.
  • Plant ID knowledge of what works well in Texas
  • Professional experience in the landscape industry: detail maintenance, plant care, installation techniques of soft-scrapes, drainage and hard-scrapes, irrigation, landscape lighting, etc.
  • Proficiently and safely operates and maintains push and power mowers, zero-turn, hedge, spin trimmers, backpack and leaf blowers, shears, chain saws, tillers, hand pruners, pole pruners, hoes, shovels, rakes, hedge shears, wheelbarrow, etc.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Must have good communication skills and ability to motivate others
  • Ability to work around bees, poison ivy, pollen, thorns, and other environmental risks
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment National Sex Offender Search, Criminal Background Check, and Drug Screen.
