As a part-time Exhibit Encounters, you will lead conservation-focused encounters throughout San Antonio Zoo, deliver interactive experiences through informal, mission-aligned encounters between zoo animals and guests and connect exhibit animals with meaningful moments that inspire guests to adopt behaviors that secure a future for wildlife. WORK SCHEDULE AND COMPENSATION

We are a year-round operation; this position requires a flexible schedule for workdays, weekends, holidays, and occasionally after-hours for special assignments. The position is a minimum of 25 hours a week, and the hourly rate for this position is $9.26.

A DAY IN THE LIFE AS AN EDUCATION EXHIBIT ENCOUNTERS

As an Exhibit Encounters, you will lead conservation-focused encounters at various exhibits and interpretive stations throughout San Antonio Zoo. Exhibit Interpreters perform various tasks to deliver interactive experiences through informal, mission-aligned encounters between zoo animals and guests. Interpreters: Exhibit Encounters intertwine meaningful objects (artifacts, biofacts, graphics), exhibit animals, and personal moments that inspire guests to adopt behaviors that secure a future for wildlife. Interpreters: Exhibit Encounters may also engage zoo guests by supporting special events, attending outreach engagements, and leading tours. The Interpreter: Exhibit Encounters works in the Education Department and reports to the Guest Encounters Interpretation Manager.

You must be fully committed to San Antonio Zoo's mission to create awareness that inspires action to care for the wildlife we steward and the animals we protect. You take pride in knowing your hard work is making a difference in wildlife conservation.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION: EXHIBIT ENCOUNTERs

  • Strong desire to work with the public
  • Must be a minimum age of 18 due to closely working with animals
  • Ability to work comfortably among a wide variety of people
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and productive working relations with fellow employees
  • Strong natural history/ecology/interpretive background as indicated by previous experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively on a microphone in English, presenting biological, historical, and conservation information in a professional and engaging manner
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Word, Excel, and related programs
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Must have a clean driving record for vehicle operation
  • Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment National Sex Offender Search, Criminal Background Check, and Drug Screen.
