San Antonio Zoo is looking to hire a full-time Mammals I Animal Care Specialist to join our zoo family! As a child, did you enjoy going to the zoo? WORK SCHEDULE AND COMPENSATION

We are a year-round operation; this position requires a flexible schedule for workdays, weekends, holidays, and occasionally after-hours for special assignments. Our Mammals I position is a rotating work schedule, and the compensation for this position is $12.50.

A DAY IN THE LIFE AS AN MAMMALS ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST

Mammals I Animal Care Specialist performs various tasks related to the handling and care of animals and their environments. The work requires an amount of independent action with less immediate supervision earned after the experience is acquired. They work daily with a variety of species ranging from small and large mammals, including dangerous carnivores.

You must be fully committed to San Antonio Zoo's mission to create awareness that inspires action to care for the wildlife we steward and the animals we protect. You take pride in knowing your hard work is making a difference in wildlife conservation.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MAMMALS I ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST

  • Essential knowledge/experience working with small/medium primates and small/large carnivores.
  • For the safety of our animals, team members, and guests, you must be able to work safely around delicate, wild, and dangerous animals.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Sufficient delicacy to handle, examine and move without harming sick, injured, or small animals.
  • Sufficient strength, agility, and coordination to net, capture, and/or restrain animals of various sizes.
  • Knowledge of animal behavior and experience in the application of operant conditioning techniques
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with team members.
  • Associate degree in wildlife management, zoology, biology, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum one-year zookeeping experience is preferred.
  • Responsible for completing all online training courses by assigned deadlines.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation
  • Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment drug screening, background check, and TB test.
  • Must work in varying climates and weather conditions (rain, snow, hot, or cold).
